Developing EORTC questionnaires for melanoma, lung, thyroid cancer, patient satisfaction and I-ADL (Instrumental Activities of Daily Living) for brain tumour patients

The EORTC quality of life group developed a core questionnaire of 30 items (EORTC QLQ-C30) back in 1990 and since then has been developing additional disease or domain specific modules.

Development of these modules is a 4 stage process:

  • Phase I: literature search and in-depth patient interviews to determine the relevant issues to be included in the questionnaire.
  • Phase II:  issues are operationalised into items (questions) ready for pilot testing in Phase III.
  • Phase III: The main focus of this phase is to check the items are easily understood and not confusing, intrusive or upsetting.
  • Phase IV: The final phase is a large field study.

All the phases involve collaborators in Europe and in some studies worldwide, to ensure that cross cultural and translational issues are considered from the outset.
